The Light That Shatters Darkness, an exhibit in Morris Library's Hall of Presidents, combines the award-winning poetry of David Bond with the evocative mining photographs of former Southern Illinois University Carbondale faculty member C. William 'Doc' Horrell.

David Bond worked for over 17 years as third shift warehouse manager above an underground coal mine. He has an MFA in Creative Writing from SIU Carbondale and has won two Illinois Arts Council Award Fellowships, a MacDowell Artist Fellowship, the Friends of Morris Library Delta Award, and published poems in numerous literary journals.

C. William 'Doc' Horrell, once a student and later a faculty member, was a key figure in the establishment of SIU's Photographic Services and the Department of Cinema and Photography. His photographs documenting the region's mining history are held in Morris Library's Special Collections Research Center.

The Light That Shatters Darkness pairs Horrell's iconic images with Bond's poetic vision. It is curated by David Bond and runs from December 1, 2014 until February 1, 2015.

This exhibit is sponsored by the Special Collections Research Center, Morris Library.
